We started the engineering and technical student empowerment drive last week, to survey every home that is affected. I was insisting on templates which are comprehensive, which will gather all data and snap shots of each and every home, this should be extended to all types of buildings and any man made infrastructure, like bridges, roads etc.
The team should have subject matter experts, teachers and professors, experienced PWD or similar department work superintendents, overseers, engineers and retired engineers etc. This can be the biggest voluntary drive by technical people. We have the literacy for that, all we need to change is our attitude which keeps on giving free advice. Just get out and do!! talk less do more. We need the helping hands of retired people too…
The whole exercise should be software driven. Relevant templates has to be created and the data should be interpolated for meaningful analysis.
I strongly believe this should be treated as students assignments like practicals, and each student should be given appropriate credit for their assignments. The data should remain as the property of the Govt of Kerala. This will determine the true status of each and every building and infrastructure. I have had the opportunity to employ young smart engineers, who has never turned a screw in their life, with no hands on training. To fix a leak in the pipe they wait for a technician, this is pathetic. Every Engineer has helpers to support their work on site, Overseas everyone does their trade on their own, a truck, tools, right documents, right instructions, manuals, procedures, process, safety standards – its all about proper training and good skills. We can use this canvas to make our technical students HANDS ON people. Least to view a soaked building and determine whether its safe or not.
This record will scientifically determine the remedial works too…once the results are categorized the remedial works can be streamlined, procurement and correction measures can start in a scientific cookie cutter manner.
I believe in the burger serving concept (ex.Mcdonalds), for every order its the TRAY first, then FRIES, then the BURGER, LAST THE COKE… the sequence has a reason if they take the COKE first it will spill by the time they reach the fries…
well the experts will do all this I am sure, but the kids the young engineers should follow this meticulously.
The Cycle will complete once the same team support the construction, supervision and signing off, of the completion certificates.
It’s prudent to take ownership and responsibility. We cannot tolerate any compromise in quality, whatever the factor of safety of the design is.
Make sure the same students take this end to end instead of dropping in between. The evaluation and credits should be given to the team which completes all the activities.
They will form teams with Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Architecture etc for executing the:

The most important element in the whole rebuilding exercise is to be conscientious, transparent, NO Cheating the system ever, do not even dream of compromising the great values we all saw amidst our fellow humans.
Many of the departments which employs technical crew has been notorious for centuries in skimming cement, steel and still taking facilities and making deliverables substandard. This was mainly when the remuneration was not matching the life style. It is different now and we have to agree not to disagree with the fact, if we dilute the quality of infrastructure, the catastrophe is not limited to others it comes to you and you get washed off!! if not you today your next generation gets washed off!!
Hence lets stop compromising on public infrastructure. Do a good JOB, Do not Compromise on the quality of work!!
Let the young budding technical team take ownership in being the Ombudsman
